The Kis-gerecsei quarry is an abandoned quarry deep in the Gerecse mountains. Since it is
far from any settlement, please plan your trip in advance to make sure everyone arrives on
time.
BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT:
If you come by bus, from the Tardos ujtelep bus stop it is approximately a
1.5-hour hike
up to the quarry.
BY CAR:
No matter where you are coming from, first you need to navigate to the
Bikol junction
near the Reviczky-Szebényi manor house. We recommend approaching from the south via
Tardos, or from the north via Sutto.
From here, drive carefully and slowly, as you will be entering a protected forest area,
and there are potholes and unexpected ditches throughout! There are several junctions
along the way, but we will mark the correct direction with KisGeri 24 signs: you can
find the
FOREST SECTION ROUTE
here.
You must leave your car at the forest parking lot at the
Vizvalaszto (Watershed)
- or nearby. Please note that forestry vehicles, including large machinery, may use the
road, so park well to the side. You may find the barrier open, but
driving past the barrier is strictly prohibited!
There are other possible approach routes, and many of you may know the alternatives,
but we have obtained permission from the authorities for the following route on the
forest section, soplease make sure to approach the parking lot from this direction. The
reason is that this year's KisGeri 24 coincides with the Kinizsi Szazas, and several
thousand hikers will be arriving at the barrier from the Pusztamaro direction. So if you
usually come from that direction, please make an exception this time and come via Bikol, and
leave via the same route. Thanks!
From here, continue on foot towards the stabilised road beyond the barrier. KisGeri signs
will guide you on this approx. 15-20 minute walk, but here is some help:
After passing the barrier and an OKT (National Blue Trail) information board, at a small
clearing turn onto a narrow forest path,
following the National Blue Trail markings.
Heading uphill on the forest path, after about 800 metres, you will pass a statue of the
Virgin Mary on the left, and shortly after, a small hut-sized boulder on the right.
After passing the boulder - and leaving the blue trail markings - turn right, where you
need to cross a steep ditch secured with a rope.
Climbing up the small path on the opposite hillside, you will arrive at the easternmost
sector of the Kis-gerecsei quarry, the Anonymus Wall (a hidden, inconspicuous wall
section).
Continuing along the path, you will reach the first larger clearing of the quarry, the
23 Carat Court.
Continue through the quarry - the registration and competition centre will be near the
Illuzio Wall.

ACCOMMODATION
There is the possibility of camping, bivouacking and hanging out in a hammock on site. For
this, you should bring your own tent, sleeping bag and polyfoam if necessary.
KisGeri 24 is a rock climbing competition that must be completed within 24, 12,
or 6 hours from the start of the competition, depending on the category. There
is no option to pause the competition. Teams are free to develop their own
tactics; time management and route selection are entirely up to them. Points can
only be scored with the active participation of both team members — one climber
and one belayer — and no third party may be involved in a team's competition.
Equipment
Teams may compete using
their own equipment
. In most places, the tops of the climbing routes have carabiner anchor points,
so there is no need to build an anchor, but in some places you will need to
build your own. We recommend bringing one 60 cm sling and one screwgate
carabiner per team to the competition.
Solo climbing is strictly forbidden during the competition. Climbing is only
permitted with a
harness
and
belay device
. Since we will be in a blasted quarry, loose holds may occur — wearing a
helmet
is mandatory for both the climber and the belayer.
Scoring
Points are scored individually, so not every team member has to climb the same
route. At the end of the competition, the individually earned points are added
together by team, and this gives the team’s final score.
The scoring of routes has been determined based on difficulty, wall height, and
protection style. Every climber may attempt any of the listed routes, regardless
of their difficulty or length.
The scoring system is based on the UIAA scale. The essence of the system is that
route difficulty changes the score quadratically, with +/- grade adjustments,
while route length changes the score linearly.
As this is a friendly competition, there will be no judging, so each team
records its own points. We trust that, as true climbers, you will enter your
points on the score sheet honestly and according to your conscience.
The score sheet will be shared with you digitally via Google Sheets, and you
will need to maintain it on a smartphone during the competition. For the
duration of the festival, we will set up a Wi-Fi hotspot in the quarry area near
the Eső Wall, where you can also sync the points recorded at more distant walls.
Internet bandwidth will be limited to certain websites to ensure a smooth
connection for you.
We recommend bringing a power bank if possible, so your phone batteries do not
let you down during the competition. Charging from the mains will also be
available at the central tent, but we strongly ask you to use this only if
necessary.
You can earn points as follows:
The
full score
assigned to a route can only be earned by lead climbing it from the start to
the top without falling, hanging, or grabbing the carabiners of the
intermediate protection points.
With top-rope climbing,
half of the route’s listed score
can be earned. In this case too, the climb is invalidated by falling,
hanging, holding onto intermediate protection, or being pulled up by your
partner. If for any reason you cannot complete the route, lower back to the
ground and try again from the beginning.
Routes climbed with traditional protection using nuts and cams are worth
double points
, even if the route is partially bolted, for example on the Illúzió Wall,
bolted up to the ledge and then trad.
“Night Shift”: In the 24-hour category, during the night there will be a
time period when, except for traditional routes, routes on certain walls are
worth
triple points
. The extra time slot and wall section will be designated by the organizers
and announced to competitors during the pre-race briefing.
Extra Points
The
highline and slackline
webbing lines will be available throughout the entire festival. By trying them,
you can earn valuable extra points for your team. During the day, there will
also be
strength and skill competitions
, with small surprises waiting for you. Participating in the challenges may earn
extra points for your team. It is worth preparing a costume, because if both
members of the team climb at least one route in it, the organizers will award
extra points based on the creativity of the costume and the difficulty of the
route climbed in it.
Start
The start is preceded by registration and a briefing, so please
arrive 1 hour before the official start
— or, if you plan to start later, half an hour before your planned start —
arrive on site
. We expect both team members to be present for the on-site explanation of the
competition rules!
24-hour
The 24-hour competition starts at the same time for everyone. You may start
later as well, but your competition — regardless of your start time — will also
end at the official closing time of the 24-hour competition.
12-hour
The start of the 12-hour competition is flexible: from the official start time
onward, you may begin at any time. You can collect points for 12 hours from your
start time. Your competition — regardless of your start time — ends no later
than the closing time of the 24-hour competition.
6-hour
The start of the 6-hour competition is flexible: from the official start time
onward, you may begin at any time. You can collect points for 6 hours from your
start time. Your competition — regardless of your start time — ends no later
than the closing time of the 24-hour competition.
Climbing Procedure
Both members of the team may climb the same route one after the other, but only
if the next climber has already put on their shoes and is ready to climb. If
another team is waiting in line for the route you are climbing, give them the
opportunity after two attempts. Every second counts during the competition, so
please be considerate of the other climbers!
Safety First!
This is a 24-, 12-, or even 6-hour competition, so staying awake and maintaining
concentration can already be a serious challenge in itself. Do not underestimate
the shorter distances either: although the 12- and 6-hour versions are shorter,
due to warm weather, serious loss of concentration may still affect you by the
end. Pay attention to yourselves and to your partner as well. It is not worth
continuing to climb or belay like a zombie. If you are tired, take a rest, talk
with the others, or grab a caffeine bomb rather than letting the fun end in
injury or even a serious accident.
Do not forget proper hydration either! Drinking water and a buffet will be
available in the festival area, so you will not be left without refreshments.
Before every climb,
check the knot
on both the climber’s and the belayer’s harness, then check whether the rope
runs correctly through the belay device and whether the carabiner is screwed
shut.
Make this a routine!
Everyone climbs at their own responsibility. Participants under 18 may take part
with parental consent.
If you find a loose section of rock, or notice that a bolt or anchor is not in
proper condition, please contact the organizers. If you feel that someone is
behaving in a way that endangers their own or others’ physical safety, warn them
or notify the organizers immediately!
Protect the Environment!
The quarry and its surroundings are a
strictly protected
area. We ask you to pay special attention to your environment: do not litter and
do not damage wildlife. Tents may only be set up in the designated areas.
Bivouacking and hammocking are allowed anywhere except on the rock walls. Please
behave responsibly, because our shared goal is to be able to organize the
festival again next year!
Hungarian Rock Climbing Championship
KisGeri 24 is one of the rounds of the Hungarian Rock Climbing Championship, so
every KisGeri 24 participant automatically earns points on the overall
championship ranking. Participants receive points for successfully completed
climbing routes, and at the end of the championship the competitors with the
most points win the championship title. At KisGeri 24 — regardless of category —
points earned on Saturday between 6:00 and 18:00
count toward the championship score. If you want to take part in the
championship as successfully as possible, it is worth planning your tactics so
that you earn as many points as possible during this period.
We wish every competitor a successful and fair climb!
